Interestingly, the general determination of worth for colored diamonds is the complete opposite of white diamonds. White diamonds lack color but offer maximum shine and brilliant, raising their value. On the other hand, colored diamonds have depth of color which determines their value.

When it comes to pricing in general, the fancy colored diamonds are usually more expensive than white diamonds. But this is no hard and fast rule. In fact, colored diamonds that do not have a strong depth of color may well be worth less than a smaller white diamond that doesn’t have any imperfections. The same goes for colored diamonds that are more common, like browns and yellows.

Up until recently, brown diamonds were mainly used in other industries and not considered worthy of jewelry. Today, brown diamonds have been rebranded to chocolate diamonds and are steadily gaining popularity.

The rarity of a diamond will also play a big part in its value. Colored stones, again, win. White diamonds are fairly easy to find compared to their colored counterparts. The most valuable and rarest of diamonds are greens, blues, pinks and reds.
