Silver jewelry is a pretty yet delicate addition to any outfit. But, handling and wear and tear can result in your dainty pieces discoloring. We’ve put together this easy to follow guide to cleaning your silver safely and ensuring your rings, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and watches continue to look as shiny and bright as the day you bought them.
Things to Keep in Mind When Cleaning Your Silver Jewellery
When it comes to cleaning your silver items, it is very important to be careful and avoid using abrasive solutions. Scrubbing your silver pieces with salt or toothpaste can remove tarnish, but it also risks leading to unsightly scratches or your silver may even wear off completely is a piece is just silver-coated.
If your items were not that costly and you are just looking for a quick way to make them shine, you can still try a paste of baking soda and water to rub carefully on your jewelry but do be aware of the consequences that could potentially damage your pieces.
Remember, you can always take solid silver bangles to a jeweler for professional cleaning.
Using Aluminium Foil to Clean Your Silver Jewellery
This is usually a very effective technique for cleaning silver items yourself but do be aware that if your silver pieces contain glue, the foil could disintegrate the glue. Also, never use aluminium foil on porous or soft stones. Be very careful with sensitive jewelry, too. It is always better to be safe than sorry when it comes to your beloved pieces.
But, if you are just wanting to clean a couple of simple silver pieces like earrings or rings, this method is the way to go. Here is what you need to do:
- Line a small bowl with the aluminium foil facing shiny side up and sprinkle over a tablespoon of baking soda. Place your silver jewelry items in the bowl.
- Boil just enough hot water to cover your jewellery and carefully pour into the bowl. The boiling water with the foil generates a chemical reaction that then transfers the tarnish from the silver and onto the aluminium foil.
- Leave your items in the mixture for just a couple of seconds. The more tarnished your jewelry is, the longer you may need to leave it in.
- Use kitchen tongs to remove your jewelry from the bowl. Remember, it’s boiling water and you don’t want to burn your skin. Rinse the items and leave them to air dry. You should discover shiny silver items that look brand-new.
There are several variations of this handy technique, and plenty of online tutorials available to guide you.
If you are unable to use this method for cleaning your silver jewelry, for example on a watch or pieces that are just too valuable to be rubbed in baking soda, rather choose a specially designed silver cleaner or take the items to a professional to be safe.
