As various fashion connoisseurs have said time and time again, fashion comes and goes, while style sticks. If you truly want to curate a lasting look with a wardrobe filled with timeless garments, you’re going to have to start turning a blind eye to seasonal trends and start working towards a more signature look of your own. So where should you get inspiration from? Well, a good place to start is trends from decades gone by that still look brilliant to this very day. Let’s take a look at a couple of classic decades to get you started! Here’s a brief look at the 1970s and the 1990s.
1970s
The 1970s saw the summer love and the wonderful aesthetic that came hand in hand with a carefree youth who enjoyed spending their time at festivals. You know that an era is brilliant when people are still replicating the look almost fifty decades down the line! Seventies staples still frequent the catwalk and in turn fill high street stores every now and then too! So, it should be relatively simple to get your hands on some of the basics that we’re about to take a look at. The first seventies staple? Perfect fitting flares. Otherwise known as “bell bottoms”, this signature denim is cut so that the trouser fits relatively tightly around the thigh and, well, flares out at the bottom. If you’ve grown used to standard skinny fit or straight leg jeans and are hesitant to try this look out, you can start out subtle. But for a true seventies look, you should adopt the attitude of “the bigger, the better”. Now, large flares or bell bottoms can land you in a predicament when it comes to footwear. Why? Well, you don’t want the bottoms of your jeans to drag on the floor, so flats are out. But at the same time, heels like stilettos would just look plain mismatched in this sort of outfit. You’re saving grace? Wedges. Not only will these solve all of your problems when it comes to grazing the bottoms of your flares or getting them wet on the ground, but they’re ridiculously comfortable too! If you find a platform with as level a wedge as possible, you can easily wear them on a day-to-day basis.
1990s
If you watch any mainstream music video put together in the nineties, you’ll probably find yourself raising an eyebrow at some of the wardrobe choices. However, it’s important to remember that this was the decade when music videos really started to take off and the trends shown on-screen aren’t necessarily representative of what the average person was wearing – consider many wardrobe choices statement pieces. Believe it or not, people weren’t strolling the streets sporting space age flashing lights and moon boots like the girls from TLC in no scrubs. So what can we salvage from the 90s to incorporate into our wardrobes? Well, for a start, try to avoid the Y2K look that seems to be taking over sales apps like Depop at the moment. As we said before, trends fade while style lasts. Chances are that if you splurge on a wardrobe full of Buffalo shoes, plastic chokers, and popper button tracksuit bottoms, you’ll work the look for a month or so and then have to start over when you outgrow it. Instead, why not take a leaf from the grunge movement and try out ripped jeans, converse, and loose-fitting jumpers. These kinds of outfits are easily put together and don’t cost much. In fact, you can often find the right kind of items in charity stores or second-hand online. After all, the more worn looking, the better!
Mix and Match
Remember that the key to curating your own signature style is to be flexible and choose individual pieces that suit you down to a tee. While you may focus your look around a particular decade and the classic looks that go hand in hand with it, don’t feel afraid to mix and match different items and styles. Be creative and don’t allow yourself to be limited by labels or expectations!
While we’ve only looked at two decades, you can see that there are so many standout looks from these alone! Think of the possibilities that lie with iconic pieces from the 50s, 60s, or even the 80s. So, start taking your wardrobe seriously. Familiarise yourself with classic looks and work out whether they’d suit you as an individual. Then you can start investing in your wardrobe wisely!
